Netflix, Inc. is an American media company founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph that by the end of 2023 had approximately 260.3 million paid memberships worldwide, serving audiences in over 190 countries and enabling on-demand streaming on any internet-connected screen. Its service spans TV series, documentaries, feature films and mobile games across a wide variety of genres and languages and includes both licensed content and Netflix Originals, which by 2022 accounted for roughly half of its U.S. library. Netflix generates most of its revenue from subscription fees, with about 44 percent coming from the United States and Canada, and it has begun diversifying into ad-supported tiers and gaming. In April 2023 the company announced the end of its DVD-by-mail service, mailing its final discs on September 29 after more than 5 billion shipments over 25 years. The company’s revenue comes almost entirely from monthly subscription fees, with viewers choosing from ad-free or lower-price ad-supported plans. In fiscal 2023, Netflix generated $33.72 billion in total revenue. Approximately 44 percent of that revenue was derived from the United States and Canada, about 31 percent from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 13 percent from Latin America and 11 percent from Asia-Pacific.
